CITB Test Information
To get a CSCS Card you must complete a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. The test takes 45 minutes. It is a multiple choice test with 50 questions. You must get 45 out of 50 to pass. The CITB test can be taken at over 150 test centres nationwide.
Brief directions
The Test Centre can be located off of Dale End and opposite NCP Londonderry House. This is next to the Crown Court. The entrance to the Test Centre is on Dale End.
The CITB test was devised to prevent unqualified individuals from gaining access to UK construction sites. Today, most UK construction companies require employees to have a CSCS card. Fortunately, you can obtain one by taking the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. You can book your CITB test in Birmingham.
What to Expect in the Test
The CITB test process is very simple. When you arrive at the test facility you will be asked for an ID and sit for a security photo. Once the test begins you will be given 45 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions. Do your best. At the end, you will receive a results certificate.
What to Take With You
No ID, no test. There are no exceptions to this rule, so make sure you have an acceptable form of ID with you. The preferred type is either a UK driving license with a photo and signature, or a UK passport with the same. If you cannot produce either you'll need to produce 2 alternative forms of ID.
Acceptable alternatives include a Trade Union card, a British Armed Forces card, a recent bank statement, a credit or debit card, or an EU Country card. Click here for a full list of acceptable ID alternatives.
What to do Before Going to the Test Centre
The #1 reason people fail is because they do not study beforehand. You will find useful revision aids here.

About the Different CITB Tests
Anyone who wishes to obtain a CSCS Card in order to start or further a career in the construction industry will need to sit for the appropriate level of CITB health, safety and environment test. Currently, there are three levels of the CITB test and which card you hope to obtain will determine which level of test you should take. Those levels are:
- Operatives Test
- Operatives or Specialist Test
- Specialist, Managers or Professionals Test
Operatives Test
If you are brand new to the industry and are looking to obtain a CSCS Red Card (Provisional) you will need to take the Operatives Test. Be aware though that you can only obtain this Card if you never had any type of CSCS Card in the past. Also, if you are a labourer and hope to obtain a Green Card you will also need to take the Operatives Test.
More people tend to fail the Operatives Test than any other. This is likely because they think it is the lowest level of CITB test, so it can’t be very difficult. As such, they don’t study. We strongly encourage you to pick up some revision aids and arrive for the CITB test in Birmingham prepared.
Operatives or Specialist Test
The Operatives or Specialist CITB Test is intended for those hoping to obtain a CSCS Blue Card (Skilled Worker), Red Card (either Apprentice, Experienced Worker or Trainee), or a Gold Card. The Operative and Specialist Test is more involved than the standard Operatives Test
Specialist, Managers or Professionals Test
For a CSCS Black Card (Manager), A Red Card (Technical, Supervisory or Managers), or a CSCS White Card (either Academically or Professionally Qualified Person), you will need to take the Specialist, Managers or Professionals CITB test.
The Specialist, Managers or Professionals test is no walk in the park. It’s intended to weed out unqualified individuals from the upper echelons of the construction industry. So take it seriously and study beforehand.
Final note: You must take the CITB test within 2 years of applying for your card. If more than 2 years have passed since you took the test you will need to retest.
